This is a lengthy review but I’ve tried to cover all of the highlights and things you might have questions about as well as my experience with the gate in general. This gate is a great product! It[gate] is made of steel, not some cheap plastic and lightweight wood contraption which breaks easily under the tension required to hold it in a doorway. While the listing is for stairway and hallway applications, they can be used in doorways just as well. It is important to note that this gate must be hardware mounted, it can not be pressure mounted. While it can feasibly be done with just a screwdriver, a power drill will make the job easier. Two of these were installed in doorways in my home to grant our 2 cats reprieve from being chased by a very rambunctious Bassethound puppy at every turn. We originally had wooden & plastic combo gates but they were cheap and cracked after a very short period of time. I returned one gate once and the other gate twice; the wood & plastic gates were also pressure mounted and unlike the steel gates, weren’t actually true gates. We had to remove then reinstall them every time we needed to pass through the doorway which was a real pain or step over them which caused one household member with severe knee problems a lot of true pain not to mention the danger of falling if a foot hadn’t cleared the top of the gate as happened to another household member. These steel gates were the perfect option because they actually have a gate which pivots open and then latches back into place as needed. For those of you who are interested in info pertaining to keeping your little one safe, I highly recommend this gate. It is designed such that you choose which direction for the gate to swing open which makes installing at the top of steps/stairs, very safe because it can & should be installed so that the gate will not swing out over the steps/stairs, only over a floor. The gate can be easily opened one-handed by an adult or older child but your toddler won’t be able to manage the task, even with both hands. When properly installed following easy to understand printed text and pictures for clarity, the gate is spaced such that a little one can not get his/her head stuck in the space between the bottom of the gate and the floor and the uprights/rails are also designed with that in mind. The design makes it easy for you and your littleone to see one another so you can keep an eye on the little one and he/she can track your movements easier too so that separation anxiety doesn’t kick in. When you’ve finished installing the gate you will have 2 pieces left over, it’s supposed to work out that way. Save the two pieces along with the installation instructions and the marking templates in the event you wish to move the gate and need it to swing in the opposite direction. You would also need the installation instructions in the event you wish to purchase a completely new hardware kit for the gate. Be sure to circle the model number of your gate inside the instructions so that you’ll remember which hardware kit to order as there are two different kits available. I highly recommend this gate whether for baby humans or baby pets. I believe it to be a very good quality gate. One last noteworthy point; a small level and something to use as a temporary shim may come in handy. If like me, you live in an older home built by hand and on blocks and therefore may not have level floors. You’ll need to level the gate so that the latch works as intended. I speak from experience. One gate is fine but the other takes a bit of finessing to get the latch to catch as it should. It works fine but eventually I intend to move the hardware on the pivot side of the doorframe so that it functions smoothly.

As you can see from the picture I do not have this baby gate set up over stairs it’s just in the hallway. It looks better than just a plastic gate. It holds up really well especially when my baby or dog are messing with it. It is so easy to open and close and even lock. The height is ideal as my partner is a foot taller than me so it works well for both of us. It’s easy to use it was fairly easy to assemble and the price was fair. Overall, this baby gate has good stability and it’s sturdy and I would recommend it for other parents or pet owners.

The media could not be loaded. Like others have said the gate is very particular about where it’ll work. It makes sense; I think the company really doesn’t want anyone installing it incorrectly at the top of a stairway. But we needed it to swing the opposite way, and gosh darn it, I was gonna make it happen. So I just installed the latch part upside down for now, and didn’t use the part the bottom screw uses as a stopper. It doesn’t work perfectly, but it does really work. I’ve added a couple photos of this. Not using the bottom piece has caused zero issues, which is a relief. If our kooky dog could get through, she would. She opens doors like a velociraptor trying to get into the Visitor’s Center. When not in use, you want to keep it flush to a wall, right? Even if you have it leveled perfectly, all it takes is a touch for it to partially swing away from the wall. So to keep it flush, I added a magnet with a hole in the middle that I had laying around to the wall’s base trim with a screw and washer (make a pilot hole first though, or it’ll split the trim!) It works incredibly well; keeps it secure but is super easy to pull away from the magnet. I added a photo and video of that too.I tried to find a comparable magnet here to the one I used – if you search Neodymium Round Countersunk magnet (I’d suggest ones 1” or larger) should work great. Here’s a link of one similar to ours: DIYMAG Neodymium Round Base Cup Magnet . Probably any strong magnet with double sided tape would be fine, as long as there’s no chance of anyone pulling it off and swallowing it. Yikes, that’s a bad thought. Magnet with a hole in the middle wins.ADDED BONUS: THIS GATE + ROBOT VACUUMSBefore getting this gate, for years we had a pressure gate with a tiny swing door in our hallway. We used to give our dogs separate safe places to be while they chow down a meal, and for when they need a time out from each other. Although none of us liked the tiny door, nor tripping on the base of the gate, we made it work. Well, enter our new Roomba. To allow it to do its thing, I had to keep sliding the pressure gate high enough to let it pass under, or dismantle it entirely; it was a pain and was starting to scrape paint off the wall. Well, this gate solved that problem. We can swing it wide whenever not in use. The Roomba’s happy, the dogs could care less either way, we have regular hallway width all the time and don’t have to step over to get through our old gate anymore (the pressure gate’s door was like 23″ wide….kinda narrow.) The magnet I added to keep the gate flush to the wall ensures the Roomba doesn’t accidentally lock itself behind the gate. And the magnet hasn’t interfered with its computer brain, which is fantastic, as if our Roomba died, I would literally jump off our roof. Get a Roomba – they are life altering. If this review was helpful, I would truly appreciate it if you’d click the Helpful button below. Thank you very much!

  6. Charles lachapelle

I use this gate for my dogs. If you set the hinge point properly, it will swing out of the way and you won’t even know it’s there when not in use. Love that it fits a wide range of openings. It is of solid construction. Been using mine every day for 2 months now with no issues. Plastic parts, if used properly, without any abnormal force, should last a long time.

  7. James R Morren

Great gate. I gave it 4* instead of 5* bc a component was missing from my first order. Second order was perfect.
